Eco-friendly alternatives to sponges – Things to consider

Before you make a purchase, there are a few aspects of eco-friendly alternatives to sponges you should consider. What should you pay special attention to when purchasing a sustainable sponge?

Sustainable Material

Traditionally, they used to make sponges out of sea sponges, today most regular sponges are made of synthetic materials (polyester, polyurethane) which are good at cleaning but are not compostable or biodegradable and therefore not considered eco-friendly. This is a shame because there are alternative materials for sponges that are great cleaners. This eco-friendly sponge by Scotch-Brite is made of 100% natural materials.

Durability and longevity

The most important thing to pay attention to when buying a new eco-friendly sponge is that it’s made of sustainable materials, but also that it’s durable and built to last a good amount of scrubbing. Otherwise, if you need to change a sponge every other day, you’re missing the eco-friendly point.

That’s why it’s worth it to make sure you are choosing a dish sponge that is durable and eco-friendly all at the same time. Costumers recommended the Plant-Based Scrub Sponge by scrub-it as a sponge that lasts them for months.

Resistance to odors

Some sponges tend to get smelly pretty fast, you probably know it from after cleaning a dirty pot, but you should know it has to do a lot with the material of the sponge, how you keep it dry and the kind of dish soap you’re using. If your sponges tend to develop bad odors fast you might want to consider TEALTRUNK silicone sponge and scrubber as it doesn’t absorb odors at all.

Easy to clean: Dishwasher/microwave safe

Not all eco-friendly sponges are easy to clean, some materials stay oily and smelly even after a good wash, and some materials are just not suitable for the dishwasher because the hot water will ruin their structure. If you want a sustainable sponge that is also suitable for the dishwasher you should consider Full circle nutshell walnut scrubber – it has just enough roughness for a good scrub without scratching the surface.

Will it scratch pans and delicate surfaces?

Some materials might be sustainable but are just to rough to clean delicate Teflon pans for example. Metal scrubbers are eco-friendly and are great for cleaning sticky left overs, but use it on a sensitive pan or glass plate and you’ll ruin it. If you need a green sponge for delicate cutlery or pans you should consider Mioeco natural non-scratch sponges.

My favorite biodegradable sponges

eco friendly alternatives to sponges

Personally, I was disappointed to find that so many sponges advertised as green and organic are not recyclable or compostable. So this was one of the main points I was paying attention to when looking for eco-friendly alternatives to sponges.

The Heirloom Mayan Loofah Scrubbers, on the other hand, are 100% compostable, BPA-free and produce zero waste during a chemical-free manufacturing process. The loofahs themselves are sourced from a single Mayan family in Guatemala, giving them a source of stable income with every loofah scrubber sold.

Moreover, I simply loved how natural and green Miw-Piw loofah dish scrubber is. The plant-based fiber makes its whole life-cycle highly sustainable, from manufacturing to disposal. My only concern is whether it is as soft as advertised but it will be easy to find a use for it even if it is too rigid for dishes.

DIY Eco-friendly alternatives to sponges

eco friendly alternatives to sponges

Old plastic sponges can carry all kinds of bacteria, and produce large amounts of toxic waste during the manufacturing stage, and are not recyclable at all.

Did you know you can make your own DIY eco sponges? Some of the options are re-purposing old towels, crocheting a sponge from bamboo or organic cotton, or you can even grow your own loofah plant.

  1. Great analysis of sponges as I try diligently to do whats best for the planet and my dishes.
I didn’t see anywhere in the analysis of where each of the sponges companies are located and manufactured.
It matter to me immensely. Do you have information on this? I try to look into it but it always diverts me back to Amazon.
    Thank you and in gratitude,

We’re currently working on improving the content on this page and your much-appreciated input will be implemented. I agree that info regarding where companies are located and where their products are manufactured is essential to making an eco-friendly purchase.

We plan to put more effort into supplying this info throughout all of our future eco-friendly product reviews.

  4. Thank you for a very useful list.
As a big user of kitchen sponges with a scrubber, I would be very interested to hear your opinion on this particular group of products? There seem to be two kinds of them. Good old Twist and newcomer Ecordinary are made of cellulose and loofah that were stitched together. I tried them both and they are very nice to use, long-lasting and compost even in my back garden compost pile. However, they are rather pricey.

Now Amazon is also full of cheaper options that are also made of cellulose sponge with sisal or coconut scrubbers glued together. While many of them have great reviews, the part I am worried about is the glue. As I understand, biodegradable glue should start degrading once you start using the sponge. So when I read the reviews saying that the sponge lasts more than a couple of weeks, there is an immediate red flag. I would be very interest to hear a pro opinion on this.

What are your thoughts about the sponges? Am I right to worry about the glue?

    • Hey Elli,

Your concerns are legit. Finding a cheaper (fully) composable sponge that will also last for long isn’t easy.

My first suggestion will be to get a sponge that is more on the expensive side but will also last longer like the Loofie scrubbers by etee.

Another option is to get two separate biodegradable products. One for sponging and one for scrubbing. That way there’s no glue involved and you can keep it cheap with an Amazon product.

      I hope that helps!
